Football’s governing body FIFA, has canceled the World Cup qualifying match between New Zealand and Fiji after New Zealand refused to issue a visa for the Fijian goalkeeper.
Immigration officials denied Simione Tamanisau a visa because his father-in-law is in Fiji’s military forces. Under sanctions in place following December’s coup in the South Pacific nation, members of the Fiji military and their families are banned from traveling to New Zealand.
Sepp Blatter, the Fifa president announced on Thursday that he would work to introduce a law limiting the foreign players allowed in a club’s starting XI to five. UEFA’s plan – having a minimum number of home-grown or domestic players in the Champions League – is much more realistic, though even that is under threat from Brussels.
