European Cup after World Cup have seen a snowballing of disappointment for the English football masses.
Spain winning Euro 2008 has pushed our reputation as underachievers further down the lav. And like such great philosophical musings as; Why are we here? Is there a god?

MARSEILLE 2 (Rodriguez 76, Cisse 91)
BESIKTAS 0
Nasri’s right wing corner evaded everyone in the Besiktas penalty area, came back off a post and Rodriguez put away the rebound. Diatta hit a long ball out of defence, Faty headed it back, Cisse tried to take the ball on his chest but as usual his control was dreadful however he FOULED Diatta before the defender could clear and used his pace to storm into the box and toe poke under Arikan.

PORTO 1 (Lucho 8 Pen)
LIVERPOOL 1 (Kuyt 17)
Lucho converted an absolute gift of a penalty. Finnan hit a monstrous 40 yard free kick to the back post, Hyypia flicked on and Kuyt headed in the equaliser as two Porto defenders crashed into each other. Pennant was sent off for going through the back of Fucile which is not doubt a cue for idiots to call into English phone ins claiming it wouldn’t have been a booking in a Premiership match – yes because English refs are crap.
Benitez must be feeling charitable because he thought Porto’s penalty was legit.
Attendance : 50,000
Red Card : Pennant 58 (Liverpool)
Assists : Sekitioui (won pen), Hyypia
CHELSEA 1 (Shevchenko 53)

REAL MADRID 2 (Raul 16, Van Nistelrooy 74)
BREMEN 1 (Sanogo 17)
Raul beat Wiesse with a great near post header after one of Real’s Dutch contingent ran the left flank and put in a great cross only it wasn’t Robben, Drenthe or Sneijder but remarkably Van Nistelrooy. Bremen hit back immediately. Diego poked a ball out wide to Tosic, his cross was charged by Ramos (using his arms) and dropped invitingly for Sanogo to volley past Casillas from a yard out. Three defenders were on Raul as he turned onto a Guti through pass, somehow they didn’t notice RVN was lurking on the edge of the box so Raul gave him a pass and Naldo’s hand went up for offside as he scored his 50th Champions League goal.

MILAN 2 (Pirlo 9 fk, Inzaghi 24)
BENFICA 1 (Nuno Gomes 92)
Pirlo, badly missed at the weekend, gave the European Champions the lead with a beautiful free kick. Kaka’ sprung a counter attack when Milan were defending a free kick, he carried the ball 70 yards with Seedorf in support and played in Pirlo who made a run on the blind side, Pirlo stopped the ball, looked up and floated a cross to the back post for Inzaghi to volley past QUIM (look it up on urban dictionary.com). Rui Costa, who spent five years at Milan, was given a standing ovation when he was substituted in the second half and patted his heart as he left. Deep into injury time the Milan defence ball watched Katsouranis fire a low cross into the box which Nuno Gomes slid in at the back post.
